JOAN DAULBY AWARD FOR YOUNG WRITERS

For the encouragement of young writers to put pen to paper and write a fictional story of their own.

Over the years, there have been so many excellent stories submitted from all age groups.  Each year, the children leave wanting more.  This is a very good sign!

Over the years, I have received many drawings from children.  The drawing to the left was created by a young student after hearing the story of Walter Wind Rescues Santa read to her by her grandmother.  What a great picture!

2013 Sponsors of the "Joan Daulby Award For Young Writers"

National Bank Sponsorship for the Grades 4, 5 Category and 6,7,8 Category

Due to the generous donation from the National Bank, our sponsors for these two categories, we have been able to once again offer this year’s Young Writers Contest without any fees for submission of their stories and with prizes for first, second and third place winners.

National Bank sets aside funds each year for donations and sponsorships.  For a number of years now, the National Bank has been sponsoring our Young Writers’ Contests.

Each year, Kathy Lee, Branch Manager of the Orillia National Bank has presented our Young Writers’ Contest before her regional representatives on our behalf.  We have once again been chosen as a recipient for their generous donation which is to be used towards encouraging the literary arts of young writers.

The Orillia Public Library and the Mariposa Writers’ Group have formed a partnership for the presentation of our 2013 Lake Country Literary Lapses event.  With the library’s cooperation, we are able to hold this celebration in their meeting rooms and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of their new building.

David Green Sponsorship for Grade 3 Entries

The awards for the prizes of the Grade 3 winners are sponsored by the family of David Green, a past member of our MWG.

During his career years, David worked for four newspapers on their editorial staff.  He taught creative writing and published and edited Green’s Magazine.  Green’s Magazine encouraged budding short story writers and poets by making their writings available to the public.

David always thought it was good to get the interest of writers while they were young and he felt expressing their imaginations and ideas in words was an important element to be encouraged.

With his passing and in his memory, the family of David Green wanted their donation to be used towards creative writing among school-age children.

What better way, than to hold a contest in David’s honour with the family’s donation supporting first, second and third place prizes.

Our celebration of the winning entries for young writers was held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Orillia Public Library, 36 Mississage West, Orillia.  Each winning entrant was awarded a certificate for the 'Joan Daulby Award for Young Writers’ as well as their respective prize monies for 1st, 2nd,and 3rd place in their category and had the honour of reading their winning story to an audience.

We encourage children to put their thoughts and imaginations down on paper and build a story of their own.
